• Sembrando Herencia 2007 - December 9, 2007, 3pm

  TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE for the Finale of our year-long, 10th anniversary celebration! Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance brings the rich heritage of Puerto Rico to Austin with a live music and dance production that passes on a heritage to a new generation and showcases more than 50 of our own dancers, musicians, and performing arts students.

  This year's Sembrando debuts our newest musical, "Angelito Borincano," performed by our professional-level performing company. When the 1899 Hurricane San Ciriaco hits the island, the Jibaros of Puerto Rico are given an Angel! Join us for the exciting adventures that take Angelito Borincano through the 1950's great migration from the mountains of Puerto Rico to New York City -- and back -- searching for a heroic act that will earn him his deluxe wings! This original, bilingual musical was created by PRFDance Director Ana Maria Tekina-eiru' Maynard in collaboration with Rupert Reyes, Director of Teatro Vivo.

  This lively performance of traditional music and dance will take place at The Theatre at Reagan High School, 7104 Berkman Dr, Austin Texas, 78752. DIRECTIONS TO THEATER: Take I-35 to US Hwy 290 East. Exit Hwy 290 at Berkman Dr. Turn left on Berkman and cross under the highway. The theatre is less than a block away on the left. (NOTE: Location has changed since last year!) Here's a Map. The Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance annual season of cultural arts programming is funded in part by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division, the Texas Commission on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.

  

• Wells Branch Elementary International Festival - November 15, 2007

  Dancers from Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance will perform high energy Plena at Wells Branch Elementary International Festival - November 15, 2007. This free community event begins at 6:30. • Tito Puente Jr. & His Latin Ensemble - Nov 10, 2007, 7pm

  The Monarch Event Center presents Tito Puente Jr. & His Latin Ensemble on Nov 10, 2007. Carrying on the tradition of his legendary percussionist father, Tito Puente, Jr. & His Latin Ensemble will take over the big stage at the Monarch for the first concert at this classy new facility. Enjoy a full evening of exciting and hot Afro-Latin rhythms and dancing, with award-winning Texas bands Cienfuegos and Salsa del Rio kicking off the evening. Like his father, Tito Puente, Jr. plays timbales, sings, composes and is a charismatic bandleader. Tito Puente Jr.'s orchestra fuses Latin jazz with pop and dance elements on a mix of originals and interpretations of his father's monster hits, such as "Oye Como Va" and "Ran Kan Kan." The evening begins at 7:00pm in the Lobby. Food will be available along with drink specials at the bar.

• ACC International Festival - November 9, 2007, 6-9pm

  The Foreign Language Department of Austin Community College hosts an International Festival on Friday, November 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. at their Rio Grande Campus. The festival, targetted at students, faculty and staff will celebrate the many cultures in our college community and also the languages offered on our many campuses. Feel free to wear an ethnic costume and bring your favorite ethnic dish to share. There will be food, door prizes, and entertainment including the Love of China Dancers, Cubano Bop, and more. Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance perform the hot rhythms of Plena, live music and dance at 7:45.

• IBM Native American Heritage Day - Nov 9, 2007

  PRFDance Director Ana Maria "Tekina-eiru" Maynard, represented Puerto Rico's Taino Culture at IBM's Native American Heritage Day event. With 6000 employees on site, it was a wonderful opportunity to educate the community on Puerto Rico's "Primera Raiz," our first root, and the native people and traditions of Puerto Rico.

• Latino Festival celebrating 16 de septiembre - Killeen, Sept 15, 2007

  Killeen's LULAC Council is throwing a Latino Festival to celebrate the 16 de Septiembre on Sept 15, 2007, 10am to 11pm. Entertainment includes a wide variety of music and dances groups, a car show, events for kids, and of course vendors. Bring your blanket to relax in the grass and enjoy performances in the outdoor amphitheatre. Featured groups include Mariachis -- and Puerto Rican Folkoric Dance! We perform at 8pm. This event is free and open to the public and will be held at the Killeen Community Center, on the corner of WS Young Drive & Veteran's Memorial Blvd. In case of rain, the event will be moved indoors. Directions: Come into Killeen on US 190, get off WS Youth Drive. Continue on WS Young until Veteran's Memorial Blvd. Community Center is on the corner on the right hand side. • 10th Anniversary Birthday Performance Celebration, Sept. 9th, 2007, 2-5pm

  We will be celebrating PRFDance's 10th Anniversary, birthday style with cake and candles, and performances of music and dance by our company and performing arts students. Our celebration will feature a "Bombazo" (Bomba Dance), a Puerto Rican tradition that invites the community to come and dance with us before the drum! Bring your card tables, lawn chairs, dominoes and briscas, and come play with new friends on our big, tree covered lawn. This event will take place at our cultural center and will be FREE and open to the public.

  By popular demand the PUERTO RICAN FOLKLORIC DANCE & CULTURAL CENTER now offers monthly Salsa Dance Workshops this Fall. Learn to dance Salsa and other modern social dances through regularly offered workshops, three back-to-back classes that offer distinct material in style and technique. Classes will be taught by our talented PRFDancer Berto Ramos.

  • Class 1 (1pm) - Basic salsa ON1 includes basic men and lady's steps, turns and partner work technique
  • Class 2 (2pm) - Intermediate/advanced turn patterns,
  • Class 3 (3pm) - Male/Female body movement, technique, foot and hand shines.

  An ALL-STAR cast of Puerto Rican Masters who have continuously trained us over the last 10 years is coming to Austin to celebrate our 10th Anniversary in CELEBRANDO 2007 - 10TH ANNIVERSARY MAESTROS REUNION, June 23 (8pm) & 24 (2pm), 2007 in Austin.

  In this once in a lifetime performance PUERTO RICAN FOLKLORIC DANCE merges with Puerto Rican Folklore Masters Modesto Cepeda, Margarita "Tata" Cepeda, Nelie Lebron and Emmanuel Dufrasne (Paracumbe), Victor "Tico" Fuentes (Loiza). Joaquin Nieves (Guateque) and their company members for a lively performance that brings the rich traditional music and dance of Puerto Rico to Austin.

  Don't miss this spectacular all-live music and dance production that will take you on a voyage through every major style of Puerto Rican traditional dance including Bomba from Cangrejo, Ponce and Loiza, Plena, Bailes de Salon (Danza), Bailes de las Montanas (Seis), and the rich Musica de las 40s.

  In this exclusive semi-formal event, our Cultural Center participants and their families and friends celebrate the end of the season with our PRFDance Familia Members and Industry/Local Sponsors. This proud afternoon of music and dancing-for-all features special performances by our Performing Arts students and Performing Company. Our largest donors will be recognized for their generosity! • Celebration of Latino Culture, Central Market - May 5, 2007, 5:30-6:30pm

  We will perform a one hour show of live music and dance for Central Market's Celebration of Latino Culture, May 5th from 5-6pm. This performance will take place on the entertainment deck at Central Market, 4001 N. Lamar near 38th Street in Austin. Free and open to the public, this event is sponsored by the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division. • Career + College Workshop, April 14, 2007

  We at PRFDance are as serious about Education as we are about sharing our Culture. We have been recently asked by many for career and college advice. Therefore, we will host a Career/College Workshop by Austin Community College.

  Interested in going to college? Not sure where to start? Have some credits already but do not know how to apply them to another degree? Have not finished high school yet? Have no idea what to study but know you need to have a degree in the present job market to get ahead. Want to know what is available to you in Austin?

  Come and meet Dr. Daisy Diaz-Alemany PhD LPC NCC, counselor/professor at Austin Community College. She will guide you through the process and help you find your path to academic and personal success. This workshop will provide helpful information for those who:

  • are interested in going to college and not sure where to start
  • need financial aid
  • have some credits but do not know how to apply them to another degree
  • are currently enrolled in high school and want an early college start
  • dual credit college/high school course info)
  • have not finished high school
  • need advise on what to study to get ahead in the job market
  • are a junior (or whatever) in high school and want a head start
  • about college and financial aid opportunities.
  • want to know what is available to you in Austin

  FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Come celebrate "Octavitas" -- the last holiday of "Navidad" celebrated on the Island, traditionally 8 days after the Epiphany. Bring your instruments and sing along to traditional Puerto Rican songs. Participate or just enjoy informal performances of music and dance by our company and performing arts students.
