El Concilio Taino Guatu Ma-cu A Boriken
in collaboration with PRFD Cultural Center
1st Annual Taino Earth Celebration 2012
On April 21, 2012, El Concilio Taino Guatu Ma-cu a Boriken in collaboration with
the PRFD Cultural Center celebrated the 1st Annual Taino Earth Celebration & Picnic,
Berry Springs Park, in Georgetown Texas. El Concilio's Tekina-eiru' Maynard,
was joined by members of the Puerto Rican cultural Center, multiple-generation
extended families from the local community, native american students from the
University of Texas, as well as visiting Taino and other natives from
as far away as Killeen. Even Attabey (Mother Earth) seemed to have sent representatives,
as a woodpecker, a sacred bird from our creation stories, and other relevant wildlife
made appearances throughout the day.
This all-day, free event featured educational activities that taught our community -- and
especially the children -- about the importance of taking care of the earth and using the
resources around us wisely. Children to seniors, enjoyed workshops that included:
making crafts with natural paints and recycled resources; how to feed wildlife with
renewable resources (the circle of life); how to play ancient Taino ballgame of batu;
making toys with available resources; native stories and Taino history!
Throughout the day, Tekina-eiru' play the Taino music of her pueblo based in the
mountains of Boriken, featuring mayohacan and bajio (Taino bone and clay flutes).
All enjoyed learning distinct maraca rhythms, songs in Taino, and basic
Taino dance. The day ended in an Areyto (ceremonial dance), in STREET CLOTHES,
so that all felt welcome to participate and celebrate all they had learned!
We thank El Concilio Taino Guatu Ma-cu
A Boriken, for teaching Central Texas about our Taino heritage.
Tekina-eirú is trained in her Taino traditions and native leadership by
(Chief) El Cacike Caciba Opil. She is a Tekina in the Suania (a teacher of traditions
in the Americas) and a consecrated Elder for El Concilio.
