Based in true history, Mami Boricua is a powerful tribute to the Puerto Rican women, mothers and grandmothers, who contributed to union efforts to improve wages and working conditions for garment industry workers in New York City in the late 1950s.
Join Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance for Sembrando Herencia 2012, our 10th production that combines live music, dance, and theater to raise awareness of often-forgotten elements from Puerto Rico's rich heritage. Each year, the Sembrando program brings history to life for the audience, dancers, musicians, and performing arts students who share in the experience.
"Mami Boricua" is Tekina-eiru' Maynard's 10th original story, written in her unmistakeable style filled with joy and adventure. Produced in collaboration with Rupert Reyes (Director, Teatro Vivo) and Zulmarie Alverio (Researcher, Puerto Rico).

Dr. Tekina-eiru Maynard, a proud member of El Concilio Taino will present the next installment of her lecture series, Taino 101: History, Myth and Reality - "Beyond Cultural Pride". This presentation will feature original Taino music on bone and earth-clay flutes and Mayohuacan (Taino Log Drums), and will take the audience through the history of the Taino of Boriken (Puerto Rico) as documented by the Chronicles of Pane, Las Casas, and others, supplemented with oral history. Mitochodrial DNA (mtDNA) results that are rewriting Taino history are shared, and Taino traditions being rescued and restored by the Pueblo of Guatu Ma-cu are presented.
Tekina-eiru will end the day teaching an Areyto "Guaytiao," a Taino ceremonial dance for all accompanied by Mayohuacans drums.

Elders around the world are encouraging the new generation to learn the old ways.
On Saturday, April 21, 2012 11-4pm, El Concilio Taino Guatu Ma Cu A Boriken,
in collaboration with PRFD Cultural Center, will hold a Taino earth
celebration and picnic at Berry Springs Park in Georgetown.
Scheduled activities will teach our community -- and especially the children
-- about the importance of taking care of the earth and using the resources
around us wisely. Sometimes....the children will be teaching us!
The day will be fun, educational, and of course, end in a Taino Areyto,
in street clothes, so that everyone can join us and celebrate all we have learned!

This all-day, free event will be held outdoors in Berry Spring Park under
old Grandfather Pecan trees. Bring your lawn chairs, a picnic lunch and

First Taino Gathering 2012 - New Year Celebration - Jaunary 8th, 2012
Our Taino Family will be enjoying a Taino Gathering to celebrate the New Year,
as well as Tekina-eiru' birthday which falls on that day!!
This event will include an authentic Areyto (ceremonial dance), and a meaningful
