The Puerto Rican Cultural Center proudly hosts the 9th Annual Taino Heritage Celebration with Concilio Taino Guatu Macu A Boriken. Each year, we fly the Cacike Cacibaopil Veguilla -- elected Chief of El Concilio Taino -- to Texas for an experience in true Taino heritage and traditions. This year's special guest includes Ba'lanani, the Concilio's highest ranking female Elder.
There will be activities for the whole family! Come learn the 1,000 year old ballgame of Batu, and enjoy an authentic Casabe Ceremony. There will be a joyful Areyto and more! Come learn the Taino ballgame of Batu! Sports lovers of all ages will enjoy playing the 1,000 year old ceremonial ballgame that introduced Europeans to the rubber ball! The Taino are the indigenous people of Puerto Rico. This morning of true Taino tradition will also include a lesson on Taino dance -- and an Areyto to open the ballgame!

This Taino heritage workshop is in collaboration with the Concilio Taino Guatu Ma-cu A Boriken - Pueblo en Tejas. The Concilio NiTaino (subchief) for Texas, Ata-bo Vazquez, and Tekina-eiru will be available to speak to anyone interested in the Taino until 1pm. This cultural event heralds the annual visit of the Concilio's Cacike Cacibaopil Veguilla from Boriken on October 9th, 2016. Details of the Cacike's visit are announced below.

Join us on September 11, 2016 for LATINOS UNIDOS, a special project dedicated to uniting the community through dance. This free event invites students of all ages to come and learn traditional dances from different Latino Cultures, and afterwards, participate in a public performance celebrating the 19th Anniversary of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center (see event below).

SPECIAL LATINO UNIDOS WORKSHOP at 10am! Enjoy free dance workshops and perform them at this birthday celebration including (see event above): Brazilian Samba de Roda (Marcia Workman from Bahia), Flor de Pina dance from Oaxaca's Guelaguetza (Edgar Yepez, Oaxaca Arte en Movimiento), Plena from Puerto Rico (Maria Mercedes Tureyguanani, Boricua), and Capoeira of Brazil/workshop only (Futa Ofamo'oni).
This day of excitement will be free to the public, and as always, family friendly! It will take place at the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, 701 Tillery Street in Austin, 78728. (Entrance in the back).
