Announcing special workshops on Puerto Rican music & Flamenco dance, part of our Celebrando 2017 Heritage Project on the Spanish Guitar and her Grandsons!
Enjoy special guest maestros, workshop details below:
Bring your guitars, cuatros, guiros and voices! This community workshop will include both demo and hands-on learning! The Spanish guitar was introduced to our Island in the late 15th century and embraced by country folk in our remote central mountains. Along with the guitar, our Island descendants (tiple, cuatro and bordonua) were the backbone of the rural mountain Jibaro music. They also were part of salon orchestras that played European classical dance music for the city elite. Workshop will include:
Flamenco is an art form from Andalucia, Spain that has been forged as a result of the cultural influences that the region has had for 1000Â’s of years. This art is most clearly expressed through its cante (song), baile (dance) and toque (guitar playing).
This community workshop will focus on flamenco as social and cultural practice. In this basic class we will learn some essential dance properties such as body posture, and basic steps; as well as identify essential musical elements, thus creating a basic vocabulary necessary for participation. By understanding its unique vocabulary and respecting common social elements of communication, students will be able to experience the art form as a fluid conversation between participants.
These workshops are part of the Celebrando 2017 Heritage project which also includes:
